On April 17, 1861, when the state of Virginia joined the Confederate States of America, Elizabeth Van Lew vowed to do whatever was in her power to help reunite the Union. As the “Call to Arms” was sent out among the citizens of both the North and South, she wondered what she would be able to do to help the Union succeed. Spying wasn’t something she planned on – it just happened. By the end of the Civil War she was commanding a large spy ring in her hometown of Richmond, Virginia. Her spy messages went directly to General Ulysses S. Grant.
