Paws to Listen is a program that improves children’s reading skills by employing a powerful method: reading to a dog! And not just any dogs, but registered therapy dogs from the Human Animal Bond group in Leavenworth, who volunteer with their human owners as a team.
Animals are the ideal reading companions because they listen attentively and do not judge or laugh or criticize.
Children should be able to read on their own. Dog owners will be with the dogs to help children warm up to the animals and get started reading. Children can read a book Miss Vickey has picked out or they can pick out their own book. This program is free of charge. When children arrive, they sign up at the Children’s Desk for a 15 minute slot.
